25 Commonly Used Abbreviations

Abbreviations are things that most of us, especially teens, use a lot these days. An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word/ group of words. They come in handy when there’s a letter or word limit and to avoid the repetition of long words.  For example NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, but that one’s too long to use repeatedly in a sentence.

I use abbreviations in my blog posts too. They’re pretty simple if we know how to use them properly.

Here is a list of some most used abbreviations you might already know or want to learn:

  • TBH – To be honest
  • TBF – To be frank
  • LOL – Laughing out loud
  • TNTL – Trying not to laugh
  • B4N – Bye for now
  • ASAP – As soon as possible
  • FYI – For your information
  • GTG – Got to go
  • TTYL -Talk to you later
  • IMO – In my opinion
  • MFW – My face when
  • MRW – My reaction when
  • IFYP – I feel your pain
  • IDC – I don’t care
  • IDK – I don’t know
  • ZZZ – Sleeping, bored, tired
  • TIME – Tears in my eyes
  • BAE – Before anyone else
  • POV – Point of View
  • DM – Direct message
  • BRB – Be right back
  • LMK – Let me know
  • CYA – See you
  • TMI – Too much information
  • TL;DR – Too long, didn’t read
  • GRADE – Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation

Abbreviations are useful in many ways, but it isn’t appropriate in writing a formal letter, email or even if we’re writing an essay or paragraph for school. They save lots of our time, but we should also know that only some letters can mean a lot of different things to different people. It might lead to misunderstandings. Always write them in full form when you first use them. Don’t overuse them. Never use them if you don’t know the proper meaning.

Do you use any of these abbreviations?
